The Arsenal as we know it today was built in 1793 to replace the old, dilapidated Arsenal. The rectangular brick building with wooden cornice was used as an arms and ammunition warehouse until the end of the fortress of Willemstad in 1926. After this period, the Arsenal was only used to store military goods. Since 1960, the striking building has been privately owned and regularly hosts cultural and social activities, such as the annual Christmas market in December. A large tunnel under the Oude Maas (branch of the Rhine) takes cars from the A29 to the other side of the river. A second, separate, huge tunnel is ONLY for cyclists/two-wheelers and pedestrians. Escalators and a large elevator allow you to get in and out of the tunnel safely. Absolutely fantastic and hard to imagine in Germany...
