Two hours before and after high tide, ships must cross the bridge; during these times, the path is closed to pedestrians and cyclists. During operating hours, the bridge is operated from the bridge operator's house. Deutsche Bahn provides information about the exact opening times on its website in the "Downloads" section. Notices on site also provide information about the current operating hours."

New construction of the Friesenbrücke (Frisian Bridge) over the Ems River. After the bridge was damaged in a collision with a ship in December 2015, it had to be rebuilt. Although it is a railway bridge, it could be used by pedestrians and cyclists. This means that cyclists cannot cross the Ems between Papenburg and Leer. A temporary ferry service has also been discontinued. Completion of the bridge was originally planned for mid-2024. Unfortunately, its commissioning has been delayed until the end of 2025.

In past centuries, Weener had a port on the Ems and was located on the left-bank trade route to the Münsterland to the south. The town was known primarily for its cattle and horse markets and exported agricultural goods. Nowadays, the port as a transshipment point and the cattle trade no longer play a role. Economically, Weener is dominated by retail for the Rheiderland region, agriculture and tourism. There are also a few industrial companies in the town.
