The NSG "Dalum-Wietmarscher Moor" between the towns of Georgsdorf and Dalum protects what is left of the formerly connected, spacious raised bog complex of the "Bourtanger Moor". The area of today's protected area was significantly changed in the past by peat extraction; these are mostly large areas that have been peated off, some of which are already in the process of renaturation of raised bogs. The Dalum-Wietmarscher Moor is an EU bird sanctuary. It is particularly important for meadow and wading birds. The highlight among the birds found here is the golden plover, which has one of its few breeding occurrences in Lower Saxony here. All conservation efforts are aimed at maintaining and improving the living conditions for this bird. In addition, other bird species such as lapwing, redshank, curlew and teal are also the focus of conservation efforts. And finally, moor regeneration is to be promoted in the nature reserve and the area is to be secured as a habitat for wild and wild plant and animal species typical of raised moors.
