The redevelopment of the area is complete, and the result looks very nice. Let's hope the vandals stay away!

The so-called Gäulsgraben ran through this spot until the Mühlenrodau was filled in before World War II. The western part of the ditch lies somewhat lower than the Mühlenrodau (Plate 15). Therefore, it can be assumed that the Rodau flowed here even before human settlement and was only diverted via the Oberwiese in the Middle Ages to power the mills. As a result, the lower-lying original streambed became a swampy area, which probably did not have water year-round. https://roedermark.de/kultur-sport-freizeit/rundwege-durch-roedermark/rodaulehrpfad/station-21-gaeulsgraben/

Most of the poplars planted along the Rodau River in the first half of the 20th century were felled long before falling branches could pose a danger. There is one exception, however: Over 100 years ago, before World War I, the miller Maneval planted some poplars at this spot. One of these trees has survived to this day. This tree is by far the oldest poplar in Rödermark. https://roedermark.de/kultur-sport-freizeit/rundwege-durch-roedermark/rodaulehrpfad/station-20-manevalsche-pappel/

A stream also hosts a large number of small animals, some of which are indicators of water quality. These include crustaceans, insects and their larvae, leeches, and spiders. All of the species pictured here have been recorded in the Rodau River between Urberach and Ober-Roden. https://roedermark.de/kultur-sport-freizeit/rundwege-durch-roedermark/rodaulehrpfad/station-19-kleintiere-in-der-rodau/

The kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), also known as the "flying gem," is a regular and welcome winter visitor to the Rodau River. However, no breeding birds have yet been observed directly on the Rodau River. The kingfisher is the only member of the kingfisher family in Central Europe. Kingfishers belong to the order Rollers, of which two other members, the European Roller and the European Bee-eater, are found in Germany. The 16-18 cm long bird is tied to water as a fish hunter. Its main food source includes sticklebacks, minnows, and minnows (see Plate 13), which it usually catches by diving from a perch 1 to 2 meters above the water. In addition to fish up to 10 cm long, its prey also includes aquatic insects and tadpoles. The kingfisher creates nesting tubes measuring 40 to 100 cm in length in steep walls of clay or hard sand, at the end of which the female lays 6-8 eggs. After about 3 weeks, the young hatch and leave the nest four weeks later. Since steep walls along rivers are often chosen, clutch losses due to flooding during the breeding season are quite high. The kingfisher also suffers high losses in severe winters, which it compensates for with a high reproduction rate. The kingfisher is native to large parts of Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It is not considered endangered, but is considered decimated. Due to improved water quality and more restored streams and rivers, its population in Germany is increasing slightly. https://roedermark.de/kultur-sport-freizeit/rundwege-durch-roedermark/rodaulehrpfad/station-18-eisvogel/

The Willow Church, located on this site, is an ecumenical project of all five Christian congregations in Rödermark. As a meeting place for all denominations and a bridge between the city districts, the Willow Church is regularly used for various services and devotions between Pentecost and Thanksgiving. The project, which was inaugurated in 2007 during the Rödermark Festival celebrating the city's 30th anniversary, was initiated by Gudrun and Frithjof Decker. Since the 1980s, Christians have increasingly made praise and the preservation of creation their concern and held services outdoors. The branches of the willow trees enclose a place of worship, a space for reflection and worship in nature. From the very beginning, a location on the Rodau River was important. Water, as a symbol of life, is of central importance to the churches. https://roedermark.de/kultur-sport-freizeit/rundwege-durch-roedermark/rodaulehrpfad/station-16weidenkirche/
