The Catholic parish was re-established in 1853 after the Reformation and was originally composed of a few local families and Catholic garrison members.

The design for today's church was created by Max Hasak, the Royal Inspector of Agriculture and builder of the Pergamon Museum.

It was built in 1836 as a solid brick building with a high, split roof and belonged to the Berlin tobacco wholesaler Wilhelm Ferdinand Ermeler (1784–1866). As the first tobacco warehouse of a foreign trading house in the first half of the 19th century, it served to store the tobacco purchased in Schwedt and the surrounding area.

The model for this sculpture was created by the Schwedt artist Axel Schulz, who created it 30 years ago. The bronze casting was completed in 2011, and the statue was officially erected on May 13, 2011.
