The buildings around the Lubwartturm originally formed the main castle. Today the district museum is located in the building on the north side of the tower. The previous building of the museum used to be the servants' quarters.

The Lubwartturm is a keep and watchtower of a former moated castle. Today the tower is the landmark of the city of Bad Liebenwerda. It is a listed building and, as the structural remains of Liebenwerda Castle, is one of the oldest towers in the state of Brandenburg. The Lubwartturm is approx. 31.5 meters high. The natural stones of the base come from the former quarry of the Rothsteiner Felsen north of the city. The former keep was built around 1207. The Lubwartturm burned down due to a lightning strike in 1699. Another fire devastated the entire castle in 1733 and led to the castle complex being abandoned.
