In the strictest sense of the term, "memorial crosses" are to be distinguished from "penitential crosses," the latter being erected by perpetrators as part of atonement for their crime. Occasionally, one encounters the rather rare term "murder memorial cross." Memorial crosses, on the other hand, were generally erected by people from the deceased's immediate circle (often family members, friends, or neighbors), and not only for victims of crime. Even today, memorial crosses are still being erected; for example, if you encounter them at the edge of a busy road, they commemorate an accident victim.
