Nehren Historical Trail 14. Train Station Train Station The Nehren town council feared "significant damage to our beautiful Wiesental valley" when the Kingdom of Württemberg and the Prussian Hohenzollern decided to build a railway line from Tübingen to Balingen in 1864. Their protests were in vain: From June 29, 1869, steam locomotives were already chugging regularly through the Steinlach Valley – and past Nehren. The town council quickly changed its stance on the railway line, because due to a large population and few local jobs, many Nehren residents were dependent on employment outside the town. How to get there? Because of this need, the town applied for a "railway stop" as early as 1872. But Nehren had to repeat its application several times, as the state railway company kept pushing back: Dußlingen station was only a half-hour walk away, and besides, restarting the train on the uphill section of track near Nehren would be too complicated. It actually took 26 years until the town finally got its small train stop in 1898, consisting of a platform and a signalman's house. In 1910, 100 people boarded the early train to Hechingen daily, where the textile factory on Friedrichstrasse provided around 2,000 jobs. The slightly later train to Tübingen and to jobs in Derendingen, Lustnau, or even Reutlingen was used by 60 to 70 people. Because "much bitterness and daily annoyance" arose among the commuters when they had to freeze on the platform in winter, the municipality paid for the extension of the signalman's post to include a waiting room in 1925 and covered the heating costs.
