Frederik's Church was designed by Nicolai Eigtved. King Frederik V laid the church's foundation stone in a grand ceremony in 1749, on the 300th anniversary of the founding of his dynasty by Christian I. However, the king's demand for the construction of the church in Norwegian marble was too much for the state budget. The Frenchman Nicolas-Henri Jardin later presented a revised plan, which was not supported by Frederik's successor, Christian VII, and construction was halted in 1770. When N. F. S. Grundtvig advocated for its preservation and continued construction and found an investor, the Danish state sold the ruins to Carl Frederik Tietgen in 1874 with the aim of completing the church according to the original plans. In return, Tietgen received rights to the neighboring property. Tietgen commissioned the architect Ferdinand Meldahl to build the church from Danish sandstone. The consecration finally took place on August 19, 1894.
