Kastellet ("The Fort") was built in 1626 by King Christian IV and later greatly expanded at the request of King Frederik III. He commissioned the Dutch fortification expert Henrik Ryse to do the work. The fort is located on the edge of the city center and Østerbro, near Langelinie. Today it is one of the best preserved five-tower fortifications in Europe.
