In June 2022, four of us cycled the entire Drake's Trail from Plymouth to Ilfracombe, spreading it out over three days. After stopping for tea and cakes at my brother in-law's near Yelverton, we headed into the Grenofen tunnel. As already mentioned here, it is only dimly lit and it is surprisingly chilly, the temperature contrast being even more noticeable on a warm day, and the ceiling is constantly dripping icy water! Definitely need your lights on and cycle very cautiously as pedestrians and other cyclists are often tricky to spot in the gloom! We stopped for the first night in Oakhampton, the second in Barnstable and the third in Ilfracombe before cycling back to Barnstable on the last day to get the train back to Exeter. It was a very pleasant tour and the first section as far as Tavistock follows the course of the old railway, so is off road and generally a gentle slope upwards, but after that the route sometimes takes to the road and is often steep and often quite narrow. Surface wise it is good all the way, suitable for road and off road bikes.

The Plym Valley Trail is a cycle route that runs from Dartmoor to Plymouth along the River Plym. It is part of the National Cycle Network Route 27 and the Devon Coast to Coast ride. The tunnel was part of a railway line that connected Plymouth with Tavistock and Launceston, but it closed to services about 50 years ago. Today, the tunnel forms part of the Tavistock to Plymouth cycle route, which is also known as the Drake’s Trail. The tunnel is lit and open for cyclists and pedestrians. It offers a fun and scenic way to explore the park and its history. The cycle route also includes the Gem Bridge, a £2m viaduct that crosses the River Walkham, just south of Grenofen. The Grenofen tunnel is a great example of how an old railway structure can be reused and enjoyed by the public. It is also a testament to Brunel’s engineering skills and vision.

Gem Bridge is closed for repairs until 4th June - no access for cyclists or pedestrians. There are small steps you can go down which locals said would allow you to cross but we're not from here so we weren't sure as there were no diversion signs at all. If cycling around the closure time ask locals about diversion before you get to the bridge just incase!

Beautiful Tor with great views. The rock formations are super cool and a great photo point and trig point to boot.

NB. You may only 'admire' the forest from the edge. Entering is prohibited due to the fragile environment!

A mysterious forest? It seems like. You better not visit this under a bright sun. With some fog and on a drizzly day, this oak forest full of large stones covered with all kinds of mosses will seem mysterious.

As has been said stay out of the wood but do explore the land above it. Longaford Tor is worth visiting, which lies north east of the Wood. I would post a photo but this isn't an option offered by this site.

Natural England are recommending not walking INTO the woods to preserve the site, there was signage from the Two Bridges direction to that effect. It's a SSSI and there was too much wear and tear over lockdown 🙁
