Wistman’s Wood is like a fairytale scene. Nestling in a moorland cleft, the atmospheric dwarf oak woodland is filled with jumbled boulders and everything is covered in thick and otherworldly moss. Ghostly green drapes hang from the trees and serpentine roots tangle together dramatically. Any moment you could imagine a fairy flying past. Most likely a leftover from the ancient forest that covered Dartmoor around 7000 BC, the eerie and enchanting woodland is a genuine journey back in time.

Due to the large boulders and twisted roots, there is no path per se and you will need to be game for a little scrambling. Once inside, the all-consuming air of magic and wonder is undeniable.

A mysterious forest? It seems like. You better not visit this under a bright sun. With some fog and on a drizzly day, this oak forest full of large stones covered with all kinds of mosses will seem mysterious.

These Ancient Oak woodlands are steeped in folklore and gave rise to Sherlock Holme's Hounds of Baskerville. Spend a night if the woods if you dare! Realistically there is nowhere to sleep in the woods as the woodland is established in a boulder field but it is still worth a visit in the dark!

Another similar woodland is found in the North West corner of Dartmoor called Black-a-Tor Copse near Meldon Reservoir.

Best just to walk round the wood as it is a nature reserve and fragile site. Too many feet will do harm.

If the small parking lot at Two Bridges is overcrowded, you can continue on the B3212 towards the Postbridge, then park in a bay and cross the sheep pasture on the trail towards Wistman's Wood.

Mystic Magic Forest from the Kingdom of Tolkien. The grove is not very big, but worth a visit.
Since the forest is only about 1.8 km from the road, you have to expect to share the magic of Wistman's Wood.

Dartmoor is famed for its granite-topped tors and windswept uplands, but one of its most magical spots is tucked in a cleft in the moors just north of Two Bridges. Stepping into Wistman’s Wood is like entering a fairytale forest. Ancient oak trees twist and writhe into intricate tangles. Emerald mosses velvet the boulders beneath, ferns feather the branches, and clumps of lacy lichen decorate the twigs. Walking to the wood is straightforward; walking through it is an adventure as you negotiate your way through the tumble of rocks (and keep an eye out for the red-eyed hell hounds said to haunt this place).

Natural England are recommending not walking INTO the woods to preserve the site, there was signage from the Two Bridges direction to that effect. It's a SSSI and there was too much wear and tear over lockdown 🙁

As has been said stay out of the wood but do explore the land above it. Longaford Tor is worth visiting, which lies north east of the Wood.

I would post a photo but this isn't an option offered by this site.

Yes this is a beautiful place, BUT you are not allowed to enter into the woods itself, please respect this, I see people disliking similar comments here *shrug* admire from the fence line
