IT WAS FINALLY REMOVED TO THE PRESBYTERY, REMAINING THERE FOR MANY YEARS. THE EXISTING PORTIONS WERE RETURNED TO THE TOWN, WHEN IT WAS RESTORED AND RE-ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION, IN THE YEAR 1920.

A small market town in South Gloucestershire.

Chipping Sodbury is a pretty market town located at the foot of the southern Cotswold escarpment. In medieval times, it was an important market centre due to its position at the crossroads on the main route between Bristol, Oxford and London. These days, the town remains vibrant and has plenty of independent shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay.

Perfect stop to refuel! There are public bathrooms as well if you need them.

The Church of Saint John the Baptist is late Norman or Transitional, and is some 900 years old. It has two effigies of knights: one is late 14th century, carved in wood; and the other is dated to 1240, carved in stone, featuring a very large shield. These two are considered to have been lords of the local manor. The church is of late Norman period, and although it has been much enlarged and altered, much of the original work remains. In the nave there is an arcade of Normal columns, there are two Norman windows and the tower is also Norman. In the churchyard at Old Sodbury is a number of old bale-tombs; these were tombs for rich merchants. Some of the gravestones date back to the early 19th century. Just outside the churchyard on the hillside is a topograph (a large stone with an engraving), installed to commemorate the second millennium, that shows Old Sodbury in relation to its geographical surroundings. A very picturesque spot with some lovely lanes in the area to follow, as well as a few good climbs.

This is an extraordinarily well-preserved example of an Iron Age hill fort. From the fort, you are rewarded with incredible views over the Frome Valley, Severn Vale and the Welsh mountains. The Romans strengthened the fort for use as a camp to support their western frontier. In AD 577, the Saxon army used the fort as a camp before the Battle of Dyrham; a decisive military encounter between the West Saxons and the Britons of the West Country. The battle was a major victory for the Wessex forces.

Great place for a run on good surface around the Ridings pitches - rugby, cricket, football and tennis clubs with a tree lined path.

The guardians are the quarry owners, I guess. Plantings of wild flowers and shrubs amongst these old tress are an effort to compensate for this decades old quarry activity. Nice job alongside this now defunct site. North of this spot there is still active quarrying. Good short hike if visiting the old High Street in Chipping Sodbury.
