According to the information above, Emperor Franz Joseph (after whom the gorge is named) is said to have enjoyed and observed the work of the cattle grazing here and also went hunting here.

The dam was built in 1833 and inaugurated in 1837, after the Kaiserklause, located further north on the Bavarian side, was relocated south. The approximately 15-meter-high dam, over which the wooden bridge leads, served to carry timber southward across the Brandenberger Ache to Kramsach in the Inn Valley. The dam was reinforced in 1930 and 1952/53 and decommissioned in 1966. Today, the bridge serves as the "entrance" to the Erzherzog-Johann-Klause snack bar.

Far off the beaten track, but a worthwhile destination for that very reason. MTB route 22 leads from Kreuth, Rottach-Egern or Schliersee through the Langenau valley and above the Valepptal or the Brandenberger Ache to the Erzherzog-Johann-Klause. The Klause zur Holztrift, named after Johann of Austria, was built in 1833 as a replacement for the Kaiserklause further north using wooden buttress construction. In 1934/1935 it was reinforced using reinforced concrete pillars. After wooden parts had to be replaced again, it was expanded in 1952/1953 to a dam height of 14 meters. It was taken out of service in 1966. Its functionality is documented in an exhibition room in the Tyrolean Farmhouse Museum.
