The concrete outlet tower serves as the central control point for the reservoir's water supply. Connected by a bridge to the main dam, the tower houses sluice gates and valves that regulate the flow and distribution of water to the River Chew and the local water supply.

Spotting the house ahead signals you're almost at the summit, so shift into a low gear and enjoy the ascent! The descent is equally thrilling, with smooth roads and exhilarating twists making it a cyclist's dream.

Nice place to stop for some refreshments

Amazing place. I was able to check out the shop and cafe, and have a peak at the garden, whetting my appetite to make it a day's destination some time.

Chew Valley Lake is the 5th largest artificial lake in the UK. It was constructed in the 1950s to supply drinking water for Bristol and the nearby area. There are brilliant views of the lake and surrounding countryside as you pass along the dam.

Tip: We have been here three times over the last few years and each time we managed to get a table in the café at the top of the street. One of the most beautiful views in England is made even more beautiful with cream tea or another treat! Here you sit quietly and just wait until no one is in sight: and then quickly take your dream photo! In addition, the service is friendly and the prices are not too high. An iconic hill made famous by the Hovis adverts.

Can be busy with traffic as is a good connection between Backwell, and the Airport. Proximity of quarries and other industry means it can be less pleasant at off-peak times. Which is a huge shame because this is one of the few really good alpine style climbs/descents within touching distance of Bristol.

Currently closed since Jan 2022.

5 on the beach café is worth a stop. Open 9:00 - 18:00 everyday and serving light meals, drinks and snacks.

Longleat House drive is a stately way to arrive at the house and a great road to ride. The house and surrounding safari park are paid entry but there is access via this road and several others through the estate.

Great old style country pub. No frills

An "Hovis Loaf" to celebrate the Ridley Scott advert was created in 1980 and placed at the top of the hill as a donations box and info point, but was subsequently moved to a siding outside the Town Hall to prevent vandalism and accidents.
