The concrete outlet tower serves as the central control point for the reservoir's water supply. Connected by a bridge to the main dam, the tower houses sluice gates and valves that regulate the flow and distribution of water to the River Chew and the local water supply.

I don’t usually like audio guides but this was really well done. Interesting castle history, but also the characters and stories. And the chapel at the end is an excellent finale. I spent almost an hour here. No cafe but you can get tea/coffee/ ice cream. A good stop!

Great stretch of road, I know I am nearly at Bristol, or just getting started. Either way I cannot help but stop and enjoy the view, just stunning.

Chew Valley Lake is a well-known scenic beauty spot, top quality fly-fising destination and the fifth largest artificial lake in the UK. It’s also a haven for birdwatchers, with wildfowl and migrating birds often seen feeding in the reed beds around the water.

Known locally as "Two Trees", this is a brutal climb. It basically goes straight up the shortest route to the top.

Descending Blagdon- fun but make sure you can trust your tyres and brakes!

Chew Valley Lake is the 5th largest artificial lake in the UK. It was constructed in the 1950s to supply drinking water for Bristol and the nearby area. There are brilliant views of the lake and surrounding countryside as you pass along the dam.

The Ring O' Bells in Compton Martin is a 16th century traditional village pub. They serve great food, drinks and snacks and are very happy to greet muddy runners. The Ring O' Bells is on the Butcombe Trail, a 47 mile (75 km) circular pub crawl around the Mendip Hills.

Even getting up to Blagdon is tough, with some spots pushing 12%. Once you've passed the main road and avoided the tempting coffee stop a sustained section of 10% gives way to relative flat. Go round a corner and you're greeted with a wall at 15-17. And you might think, oh yeah that's fine. Nope. Once you're out of the village it's a long draggy section of 7-9% with little rest and no shade whatsoever. That's what will finish you off. On the plus side you don't have to tangle with nearly as many cars as Burrington.

Started in the 14th century, and occupied by the Hungerford family for 300 years, Farleigh Hungerford Castle (now looked after by English Heritage) commands an impressive position overlooking the peaceful Frome Valley on the Wiltshire/Somerset border.

Very nice road at none-peak times. If you're in the Chew valley this is the quickest way to Sandford and the Strawberry line and vice versa. The roads around Butcombe are usually quieter though.

Managed by English Heritage this is a paid entry property unless your a member. The castle is a fortified mansion started in the 14th century. Today it's a ruin but there is still quite a lot left to explore. If you don't pay you can see the entrance from the car park which is quite impressive. You can also walk around the base on a footpath to the right (when facing the castle on the road). Open 10:00 - 17:00 everyday.
