The concrete outlet tower serves as the central control point for the reservoir's water supply. Connected by a bridge to the main dam, the tower houses sluice gates and valves that regulate the flow and distribution of water to the River Chew and the local water supply.

Lovely but horrible road surface

Beautiful little stretch of road here, especially so during Summer.

Chew Valley Lake is the 5th largest artificial lake in the UK. It was constructed in the 1950s to supply drinking water for Bristol and the nearby area. There are brilliant views of the lake and surrounding countryside as you pass along the dam.

From Norton it's a drop to a ramp and then a reasonably long drag along a single track road with tall hedges. From Chew Magna it's a little sharper and a fair bit shorter. Either way the view is just before or after the crest of the climb.

This road is almost always busy so almost always better as a descent. I got up to 70kmh one time coming down here.

Fine in winter but best in spring. A nice little reprieve after climbing one of the nasty hills round here before heading back into Bristol or the Chew Valley. Alternatively a gateway to one of my favourite spring/autumn rides, Pensford to Stantonbury Hill via Burnett. Did that ride once in winter and had to stop while a nice farmer scraped ice from the road.

Excellent car-free lane now that there are LTN bollards in place. Surface has already become littered with general debris (branches, sap, gravel) etc. so may be a little sketchy in the Winter perhaps.

The Old Mill on the River Chew is a historic building located in the village of Chew Magna, Somerset, England. It is a Grade II* listed building and is believed to date back to the 16th century. The mill was originally used for grinding corn, but it was converted into a tucking mill in the 18th century. Tucking mills were used to full woollen cloth, a process that involved shrinking and stiffening the fabric. The mill continued to operate as a tucking mill until the early 20th century. The Old Mill is now a private residence, but it is still open to the public for visits. The mill is located on the banks of the River Chew and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. Lovely reward for the spin to win climb from Compton Dando or Saltford. Cars should technically have no reason to come down here.

Any where to get off the main roads is great and this one ios lovely, pretty gentle all the way.

Minimal traffic and lovely little lanes.

Interesting building. I think this might have been an old gatehouse many years ago.

It’s not that tough a climb really. Really good views you can see for miles up here and very peaceful spot.

Nice spot to chill by a stream with a bench. What more do you need?

Quiet lane into chew magma which is a small village with a few pubs and a convenience store.
