This is a onetime opportunity to cycle a few kilometers on the beach, truly outstanding experience 😎☀️ You need to catch the right tide though. Won’t be as easy with high tide coming in. Sand is firm and solid when you cycle on low tide.

By now the gravel section has started and will continue in various sections for the remainder of the route. The gravel alternates between compact and very loose, so good to keep close attention to the changing surface.

Reaching the top of the hill and looking back over the bay is a great reward for reaching the top. One of many stops along the road, it's hard not to with so many beautiful views to look at.

The bendy nature of this road helps the incline to be a lot koner, but still get the best of all views.

Rising out of Raglan inland to begin the Karioi circuit. This climb on Te Hutewai Road is awesome, with each hair pin offering a new and awe-inspiring view.

By this point as you can see the surface has turned to gravel for what will be the first gravel section of the route. Maybe one or two cars an hour, which is great because you have the space to assess which section of the road to take next. The landscape is beautiful and travelling on a bike just makes it all the more magical. Birds flying out alongside you. With it being spring there were plenty of near bird misses as they tumbled out of the hedgerows fighting with each other. My bike type of choice though was definitely a mountain bike. There were a few back skids, even with the wider tires.

As the road climbs out of Whaingaroa Raglan and you traverse a series of hairpin bends taking you to the top of the hill, you're treated to expansive views back along the bay to Raglan. Granny gears all the way giving you the opportunity to admire how quickly and how much the environment around you changes from the beachside town, to farmland to a mixture of that and native bushland. Once you get past Xtreme Zero waste (Amazing dump shop!) The traffic drops to make a beautifully quiet ride.

I would recommend mtb not gravel bikes on these roads.

An opportunity here to stop and look back at the road just travelled. Definitely by this point it's getting a little hard with the constant, dynamic, assessing of the road surface, undulation of the road. So admiring your work so far is certainly a good boost.

Beautiful views and a great place to stop and rest. Whether as a destination or rest stop on a longer race. If you're continuing on away from Whaingaroa Raglan, be aware the roads become a lot more technical with lots of steep banked corners with loose gravel.

At the junction of Gibbston Highway and Crown Range Road is a big sign welcoming you to the iconic Crown Range Road, a scenic mountain pass, starting with zig zag hairpin bends, between Frankton and Wanaka. It’s hard work but you’ll be rewarded with stunning views and a long downhill stretch which culminates in a cosy pub with a log fire.

Cromwell is a really beautiful village. It looks a bit like the Wild West. And yet: Cromwell is a historic town that is worth a stay. Take your time and explore the surrounding area on a few hikes. The city was founded during the gold rush in the second half of the 19th century. Built in the 19th century, Cromwell is now known for its numerous orchards. The town of Cromwell was built on the banks of the River Clutha, the second longest river in New Zealand. I recommend you follow the road that runs along the river - whether towards Queenstown or Roxburgh. This way you can discover wonderful and different landscapes. Brave travelers can rent bikes and set off to cover the Clutha Gold Trail; a route that connects several cities in the region. A nice alternative for the sporty ones among you.
