4월 13, 2025, North Newbald Village Green
Archetypal English village with its large village green surrounded by pretty stone houses and two pubs. The open beck runs in front of the houses in Eastgate, each with their own private bridge. The banks of the stream are planted with flowers. A large flat circular stone on the green known as the whipping stone is probably the base of the old market cross but rumour has it that a man was whipped to death here in 1624. https://www.newbaldparishcouncil.gov.uk/about-newbald/

This is clearly a popular route. I never see anyone at the godforsaken hours that I go out hiking and trailrunning (generally start before sunrise in winter), yet I did see plenty of dogwalkers, hikers and runners out and about in Welton Dale and surrounding bridleways and footpaths. As a result a lot of the tracks are very muddy. Not boggy, you won't lose a shoe, but they can be very slippery in winter.

1월 19, 2025, All Saints' Church, Brantingham
All Saints’ Church is 12th Century in origin and was restored by the Victorians in the late 19th Century. It is situated almost at the foot of Brantingham Dale in an open aspect. It is without doubt one of the most picturesque churches in the East Riding of Yorkshire. A fairly detailed history of the church compiled in 1965 and updated in 2014 is available as a pdf at https://d3hgrlq6yacptf.cloudfront.net/5f115a55324ea/content/pages/documents/1573224210.pdf

Take a hike here in winter, early morning or late afternoon when there is less natural light, as the hundreds of lights around the church wall at ground level are quite spectacular. There has been a church in this location since the reign of William Rufus in the 11th century, as coins from the period were found in the foundations of part of the church during its 19th-century restoration.

Picturesque village with ample parking around the vicinity of the pond, which is quite spectacular around Christmas, when backlit by hundreds of lights on the wall around St. Helen's Church.

St Helen's church in the heart of the village of Welton. There is normally a gathering for worship on a Sunday morning.

This is one of my favourite local walks and where I go foraging in autumn to get some conkers to keep the spiders away. Yes this old wive's tale does work, not for all spiders, but for most. Though it can get a bit boggy in the wetter months.

1월 17, 2023, Julian's Bower Turf Maze
Julian Bower is a great example of a well preserved turf maze with its sunken form demonstrating its great age. It is thought that the maze was cut by Spalding Priory before 1220. It is one of few surviving turf mazed believed to be from the medieval period.

9월 8, 2022, North Newbald Village Green
North Newbald is a 'typical' village with a village green and pubs at its centre. Ings Beck flows in front of village houses which makes it even more picturesque. It is a popular place for walkers as the Yorkshire Wolds Way passes nearby. On the village green you will see the Whipping Stone. Legend has it a man was whipped to death here but it is more likely to be the base of the old market cross. Newbald stone was used to build parts of York as well as St Mary's and the Minster in Beverley. The quarry is long since depleted.

Great area to see local wildlife. Be careful as there are sometimes big gaps in the fence which over-eager dogs could squeeze through.

Church is stipulated at the main road which goes through Brantingham, due to its location there is an area to park a car and walk up the hill to get to the trails around Brantingham and Welton. Would recommend a visit.

Julian's Bower is a name which was given to turf mazes in several different parts of England. Only one of this name still exists, here at Alkborough in North Lincolnshire.

3월 8, 2021, Julian's Bower Turf Maze
Julian's Bower is a well preserved example of a turf maze, its sunken form demonstrating its great age. It has been suggested that the maze was cut by Spalding Priory before 1220, and thus predates the pavement maze in Chartres Cathedral. It is one of the few surviving turf mazes believed to be medieval in origin.
