In the Reunification Fountain, a man and a woman—representing the people in both parts of Germany—hurry towards each other. Their arms are outstretched in a gesture of embrace. But they are running towards an invisible wall that separates them. This impression is achieved by flattening the front faces of the figures.

Duderstadt is a town and independent municipality in the Göttingen district in southeastern Lower Saxony. The predominantly medieval townscape is characterized by around 600 town houses from various styles – mainly half-timbered houses – the two large town churches of St. Cyriacus and St. Servatius with their mighty towers, the Westerturm with its distinctive twisted spire, the restored city wall, and the town hall, one of the oldest in Germany. This is the reunification fountain on Marktstrasse. It commemorates the division of Germany. It shows a couple running towards each other. However, they cannot hug because the border that ran between the Federal Republic of Germany and the GDR at the time is holding them back. The Reunification Fountain was created by the artist Karl Henning Seemann 193-1994. The casting was made by the Strassacker company from Süssen on behalf of the city of Duderstadt.
