Steep, muddy, and washed-out ruts with scree certainly make the path difficult for strollers. Due to the condition of the path and the poorly visible access at the top, it's not overcrowded, so I enjoy walking this route, pausing briefly at the wayside cross to take a look at the Sacred Heart Chapel along the way.

The Hoher Peißenberg and the pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary at the top of the mountain are located on the Way of St. James from Munich to Lindau or, alternatively, Bregenz. On the 16-stage route of this Way of St. James, the Hoher Peißenberg marks the end of stage 5 from Raisting and the start of stage 6 to Rottenbuch. Those who still feel like it in Lindau or Bregenz can then continue their pilgrimage through Switzerland, France, and Spain to Santiago de Compostela, and beyond on the Camino Finisterre to the "end of the world."

The yew is probably the oldest of the native tree species (600,000 years ago). It is the slowest growing conifer. Because yew wood is so hard and flexible at the same time, it has always had many uses. Ötzi also carried a yew bow with him. The first bans on felling yew trees were introduced in Bavaria as early as 1589. Despite many protective regulations, the once large stocks could no longer recover. Water gurgles everywhere in the Paterzell yew forest. This is due to the geological peculiarity here: on the impermeable Flinz, the calcareous water has built up a meter-high layer of tuff, from whose pores water flows everywhere. In the warm season, you can easily see the lime settling in the watercourses, as even fallen leaves are covered with a layer of lime.
