Imposing Cathedral in a relatively small and cozy town

Public footpaths are quite limited around here, but this highlight is on a very pleasant footpath on the eastern side of Whin Hill, which runs to the west through Swin Dale towards North Newbald. Easy walking, no boggy patches, overgrown vegetation or other obstacles.

Lovely circular walk starting and ending in North Newbald, part of it on the Wolds way. Great scenery and when on the tops fabulous views over the vale of York and the river Humber. On a clear day (as today) you can see the spires of York Minster in the distance.

Lovely stop by the side of the river - often swans swimming by & egrets in the trees.

Chalk streams are pristine waterways brimming with biodiversity and distinctive ecology. They flow through chalk bedrock, resulting in exceptionally clear waters and a rich array of aquatic flora and fauna. They provide habitat for a diverse range of species, including trout, grayling, and freshwater invertebrates. However, chalk streams face mounting threats from pollution, abstraction, and habitat degradation, and we need a concerted conservation effort to safeguard these invaluable natural treasures.

Skidby Mill is a Grade II listed four-sail windmill and is surrounded by its original outbuildings and courtyard. The Museum of East Riding Rural Life is housed in the outbuildings. The Mill is still operational but from January 2022 is undergoing renovations so is not currently milling flour or open to the public.
