Nendrum Monastery was a Christian monastery founded in the 5th century. The monastery finished somewhere between 974 and 1178, but the church survived until the 15th century. You can visit the ruins if you're riding past.

Pretty road along the water!

Best example of a pre-Norman monastic site in Northern Ireland. From around the 5th century, it's a stunning location nestled on the islands jutting into Strangford Lough.

Reagh Island is part of an archipelago in Strangford Lough, a vast natural harbor south-east of Belfast. In the past, the island could only be reached at low tide via a small ford. Today it is connected to the mainland and its neighboring island, Mahee Island, by two causeways. Here I found a place where I actually only wanted to take a short break and which then captivated me so much that I almost didn't want to let go.

I was attracted by this absolutely magical looking meadow, which is part of every filming location Scout for J.R.R. Tolkien's films would certainly have been worth a second look. At the top of the hill you can see the remains of a monastery from the 6th century marvel. Nendrum Abbey is considered one of the nuclei of Christianity in Ireland. At that time, however, this place was also a magnet for craftsmen, simply because there was work there. Gradually, more people settled and a small center developed at the monastery. However, this thriving place not only attracted honorable fellows, there are some indications that raids by predatory Vikings also took place as a result. In the 15th century the site was then replaced by a more accessible site on the mainland and Nendrum was abandoned and left to decay.

Nendrum (the best example of a pre-Norman monastic site in Northern Ireland) dates back to the 5th Century and also has links to St Patrick. The monastery consists of three round dry-stone walled enclosures, one within the other. There is an industrial works in the outer enclosure and a church ruin in the central enclosure as well as a round tower and graveyard. The middle enclosure has the remains of huts and workshops.
