Natural value The area is located in a local depression (+/- 6m above sea level), where the Wolzakkenleibeek and Krekelbeek (formerly Valkenlaerebeek) come together and continue as Krekelbeek and Verbindingsbeek. These streams are fed by rainfall on Beerzelberg (highest point in the province of Antwerp at 51.6 m above sea level). Because the slope in the area disappears and due to the high supply during heavy rainfall, the area is regularly flooded. In the higher areas (tertiary dunes) a heathland (Kalverheide) developed. Since these dry areas were the most suitable for building, the heathland has almost completely disappeared. In 1998, the first part of the area came into the ownership of the non-profit organisation Natuurreservaten, the predecessor of Natuurpunt. In 2002, the status of recognised nature reserve was obtained. Since 2007, after an initial expansion, the area managed by Natuurpunt amounts to 23 ha.
