Don Pedro Coloma, "Baron of Bornem." The Eighty Years' War raged across Flanders and the Southern Netherlands (1568–1648). The iconoclasm, which took place in 1566, left its mark on many houses of worship, chapels, monasteries, and abbeys. The Beggars, initially nobles, were fierce opponents of the Spanish King Philip II and wreaked havoc in the Low Countries. The Spanish king wanted to put an end to the protracted uprisings and sent Don Pedro Coloma to Flanders to support Duke Alva, the Spanish general and governor of Flanders. When Don Pedro Coloma arrived in 1577, he settled in the lordship of Bornem. The religious war raged in full force. He was assigned the Little Brabant sector to chase the Beggars across the Scheldt. Don Pedro Coloma died in Bornem on December 27, 1621.
