In summer, the ponds are almost invisible because of the reeds. This bridge/viewpoint offers a beautiful view.

It may not really be real street art, not even a full mural, but those are details. It is the work of Dzia, adorns a house directly opposite the parsonage of Reppel and is very appropriate for the valley of the Abeek where the kingfisher likes to breed (as do the bluethroat, bittern, porcelain chicken and snipe to name a few).

The Abeek is one of the most natural lowland streams that Flanders still has. The upper reaches still show the typical meanders and here and there we also find the associated marshes right next to the stream. In Meeuwen-Gruitrode, Peer and Bocholt this stream forms the backbone of the nature reserve Vallei van de Abeek. The Abeek starts on the military domain (Meeuwen) and is fed by rainwater that collects there. By means of a few small ditches the water is brought together to form the actual Abeek. Along the way there are many spring areas where the surface water from higher areas comes out. In this way the Abeek becomes bigger and bigger. In a spring area the subsoil is peaty, marshy and difficult to walk on. In the swamp forests there are many spring bloomers such as celandine, white clover sorrel, scattered-leaved golden saxifrage and marsh marigold. They benefit from the sunlight before the leaves appear on the trees. Once the leaves are on the trees, there is not enough light in this forest and few flowers can bloom. More about nature, the stream and nature walks on https://www.natuurpunt.be/natuurgebieden/vallei-van-de-abeek and on the many local information boards (see photos)

One of several sections of boardwalk. The first, of which this is part, runs through the swamp forest of the Abeek valley. The Abeek is a tributary of the Meuse but it rises on the Kempens Plateau. The Meuse valley is a lot bigger than the Abeek valley where we are here. In this section, therefore, typical swamp forest with a swamp where the stream is allowed to overflow its banks and the valley serves as a water storage. It is also called a through-flow swamp. The advantage for enthusiasts: even in drier periods it never gets bone dry here, although there was now a lot to walk on without needing the boardwalk. The vegetation is also typical with, among other things, willow, alder, reed, marsh marigold and yellow iris. Willow and alder also mean drops on your neck in this period :)

Willibrord, the so-called apostle of the Low Countries but better known as the apostle of the Frisians, is best known as the missionary who would convert the Frisians. As was often the case at that time (and in other times) this was accompanied by the destruction of some local "pagan" sanctuaries and the killing of their guards and worshippers. Willibrord used a strategy for this: he worked together with Pepijn van Herstal who in his time was occupied with conquering the Frisian river area, among other things. The Franks could use Willibrord to incorporate the Frisian empire into the Frankish and Willibrord could devote himself to the "Christianization", building churches and monasteries and amassing a very large wealth that he donated to the monastery of Echternach upon his death. He was also buried in Echternach and you can find the Willibrordus source. Just like Servaas van Maastricht, Willibrord is a so-called source saint. He is mainly venerated in some parishes and places that historically had a link with Echternach and some other abbeys.
