The Abeek is one of the most natural lowland streams that Flanders still has. The upper reaches still show the typical meanders and here and there we also find the associated marshes right next to the stream. In Meeuwen-Gruitrode, Peer and Bocholt this stream forms the backbone of the nature reserve Vallei van de Abeek.
