Mistletoe is a semi-parasitic plant that lives on living wood and roots in the wood of its host, for which it depends on water and salts. The berry-like fruit is dispersed by birds. The berries are consumed in the axil of a tree branch; the seed sticks and germinates. The root then grows into the tree. Seeds are not digested and have a sticky coating, hence the name "birdlime." The seeds are poisonous to humans.
