Birdwatching hut Grutto is the highlight of the Uitkerkse Polder. Admire and marvel at the unsuspecting meadow birds and winter guests that forage in the ground right in front of you. Here you have a front row seat. Secretly enjoy

This chapel was built in the first half of the 19th century near the site of the church of Sint-Jans-op-den-dijk, which was destroyed in 1575. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Job. According to tradition, Saint Job, abandoned by his wife and mocked by his children, sat down on a dunghill with his body covered in wounds. According to some, the remarkable crowns of the gables represent dunghills. Information can be read on site. For those interested in WWI, a fun fact: Behind the chapel lies a concrete foundation of a German anti-aircraft battery from the First World War that now serves as a flower bed.

In the 13th century, the historic Grafenkanal was dug to create a direct waterway for trade between Bruges and the coast. This resulted in a unique landscape of dunes and polders. Today, these narrow strips of dunes form a green oasis between the N34 coastal road and the sea. The special mixture of fresh and salt water – known as brackish water – has created a valuable habitat for rare plant and animal species. The De Fonteintjes nature reserve is managed by Natuurpunt and is an important refuge for amphibians, breeding birds, and rare plants.

Blankenberge boasts three impressive nature reserves: De Fonteintjes, the Zeebos, and the Uitkerkse Polder. De Fonteintjes is characterized by a diverse landscape: freshwater dune lakes, wet dune grasslands, and dense dune scrub. It's remarkable that these dune valleys were artificially created in the 15th century and have evolved into natural habitats over time. The freshwater lakes are located only about 100 meters from the sea—a rare phenomenon made possible by a freshwater lens beneath the dunes.

The Belgium Pier offers a unique opportunity to experience the impressive expanse of the North Sea, the changing tides, and the raw power of nature up close. The first pier, a cast-iron structure, was built in 1894 but burned down by the Germans in 1914. A new concrete pier was built in 1933 and extensively renovated in 2003. From here, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the sea and coastline—a place that clears your head and allows your thoughts to wander. In 2023, the walkway was faithfully reconstructed in its original form from 1933. Source: https://www.visit-blankenberge.be/de/aanbod/detail/45/belgium-pier
