In 1846 the Hertenrode district was still officially part of the municipality of Zeelhem and reached just over the main road from Diest to Beringen at the height of De Zwarte Ring. Ecclesiastically, however, this hamlet in Zelem belonged to the parish of Meldert, as the church of Meldert was more easily accessible to the residents of Hertenrode than that of Zelem. It was not until the merger of the municipality of Zelem with the municipality of Halen on January 1, 1977 that Hertenrode was administratively added to the newly formed municipality of Lummen, a merger of the former municipalities of Linkhout, Meldert and Lummen.
