9월 24, 2025, Celiebrug - Schipdonkkanaal
The Celie Bridge was destroyed twice, and rebuilt twice. This iron drawbridge, typical of the Schipdonk Canal, rarely rises. Shipping is not possible here, unlike in the past, when there was a loading dock on the Lieve River. (Mijnplatteland.com)

A beautiful section of the bike path, with a wonderful interplay of light and shadow. Benches along the path invite you to linger.

Contrary to what the name "museum" suggests, this isn't a building or a domain where you can wander around and admire all sorts of bicycles. No, they make "crazy" bikes (similar to the kind you can experiment with at De Lustige Velodroom in Blankenberge) that you can rent. There's also a drinks vending machine (at d'Oude Smisse).

The Celie Bridge enables the connection between Maldegem and Celie - Sint-Laureins. Celie is an old district on the Lieve in Adegem and Sint-Laureins, already mentioned in the 14th century. Historical explanation: The Schipdonk Canal or the Leie Diversion Canal was dug in the bed of the Lieve. The canal connected the Leie in Deinze with the North Sea in Zeebrugge. As a diversion canal, the canal was mainly intended to limit flooding, but the canal also played an important role as a new trade route between Deinze and Bruges. A first section, from the Leie in Deinze to the Brugse Vaart in Schipdonk in Merendree, was already dug in 1847-49. From Stoktevijver in Zomergem to Maldegem, part of the Leie Diversion Canal was dug in the bed of the Lieve in the period 1854-60. From Maldegem, the canal was dug further parallel to the Leopold Canal to Heist. When the canal was constructed, the old buildings around the Celie Bridge over the Lieve also disappeared. The current Celie Bridge over the Schipdonk Canal is an iron drawbridge, rebuilt after the destruction of the Second World War, according to a design by the Ministry of Public Works from 1947. Just to rest or to refill your sugar reserves - there is definitely something for everyone (but unfortunately it is anything but cheap).

Philippine is a small town on the Belgian-Dutch border and is mainly known for one thing: mussels! Philippine is the mussel capital and you will not be able to ignore that because of the various mussel restaurants in the center. It can be very busy here, especially during the mussel season (traditionally from late August to April); Whole busloads of enthusiasts come to this town to enjoy these delicacies from the sea. But why is it that Philippine is the mussel capital? There is no sea to be seen here at all. That's right, the town is several kilometers away from the sea, but anyone who delves a little into the history of the town will notice that this has not always been the case. And it wasn't that long ago that the last mussel boat unloaded its precious cargo here. In the 19th century, fishing in Philippine became increasingly important. When mussels became increasingly popular, more and more mussel farmers settled in the town. In the meantime, Zeeland mussels were exported in large quantities from Philippine to Belgium and even France. However, the reclamation of land caused the Braakman to become increasingly silted up and the port became increasingly difficult to reach. To remedy this, a canal was dug between the harbor and deeper water; this canal was festively inaugurated in 1900. Mussel production reached its peak just before the First World War. However, the silting up could not be stopped and the port was closed after the Second World War. The final blow came in 1952 with the damming of the Braakman. The mussel tradition and reputation of Philippine had already been formed and we can still enjoy it today. The many mussel restaurants are living proof of this. Mussel shell cast in a mixture of ground bluestone and synthetic resin, with a kind of water pipe through which water continuously flows over the mussel. The mussel monument, created on the initiative of the artist himself, was unveiled on July 6, 1988 during the presentation of the mussel wine by Prof. Dr. Wisse Dekker and Nancy Cornelis, the mussel queen. The maker of the monument thought that his creation would look better if a bench was added. More information at https://statbeeld.vanderkrogt.net/object.php?record=ZE10ac

One of so many towpaths that run alongside a waterway. Pleasant for cycling. When the wind blows hard, it is quite tough here, because there is little protection
