A mill is always beautiful to look at... but unfortunately it's completely abandoned and in need of some renovation...

A windmill could hardly be more picturesque than the one in Zuidzande: in the hinterland of Cadzand-Bad, in the middle of the polders, on the western edge of the village on the Sluissedijk. The nameless mill was built in 1874, restored in 1981/1982, and has not been in operation since 1999. The grain mill is owned by the 'Behoud Zuidzandse Molen' (Foundation for the Preservation of the Zuidzande Mill), which also received a large grant from the Province of Zeeland for the restoration. The masonry was repaired in 2020 with 7,000 stones replaced and re-grouted, a new 'steert' (tail) and a new gable are being installed, and the cap structure and drive are being repaired. The mill now looks practically like new. Next to the impressive mill is the miller's old house, otherwise the mill stands freely in the field on its base and with its span of 24.20 meters can freely receive the wind over the fields of Zuidzande. The Westerschelde is the southernmost river funnel of the 360-kilometer-long Scheldt, which flows into the North Sea between Breskens and Vlissingen. At the same time, the Westerschelde is an important maritime shipping connection to the Dutch ports of Vlissingen and Terneuzen and to the Belgian ports of Ghent and Antwerp.

The Red Light District of Sluis is interesting because of its natural and cultural-historical values. The ramparts date from the 14th century. Sluis flourished at that time as a trading city due to its location on the Zwin. The Zwin was an important estuary and waterway. At the end of the 15th century, Sluis' trade and prosperity declined sharply due to the silting up of the Zwin. But Sluis remained important as a fortress during the Eighty Years' War (1568 to 1648). Nowadays, nature flourishes here. Many characteristic plants grow there and various bird species breed there. In addition, this is one of the few places where you can find the rare tree frog. There is plenty to see and experience during your visit to the Red Light District of Sluis. More information at https://www.hetzeeuwselanden.nl/natuurgebied/wallen-van-sluis

The ramparts date from the 14th century, when Sluis flourished as a trading city due to its location on the Zwin, then an important estuary and waterway. Towards the end of the 15th century, Sluis' trade and prosperity declined sharply due to the silting up of the Zwin. However, Sluis remained important as a fortress during the Eighty Years' War (1568 to 1648). The current ramparts date from this time. In 1864, the Zwinpolder was reclaimed and the original port town became 'dry'. Today you will find all kinds of plant and animal species on the ramparts, in addition to their cultural-historical value.
