The village of Hemelveerdegem, located in the province of East Flanders, is a charming base for all hikers who want to enjoy the quiet Flemish nature. The picturesque village is located in the middle of vast fields and meadows.

Hemelveerdegem is a village with history... and that also applies to the church, which stands somewhat elevated above the village square, which still has the character of a dries. A wooden church is said to have stood here as early as the tenth century. It may have been replaced by a stone church in the 12th or 13th century, under the patronage of the Benedictine abbey of Geraardsbergen. It is currently difficult to date the various parts of the current church. The Gothic choir is most likely the oldest, possibly from the 15th or even 14th century. The current tower may have only been there since 1718. If the church is open (which was not the case when I visited), you can walk in. In the right transept there is a wooden reredos from 1520 (once polychrome, but monochrome since a restoration in 1905), which has been recognized as a "Flemish masterpiece").
