Het Steen (literally: "The Rock") is a medieval castle built between 1200 and 1225 and remodeled in its current form in the 16th century under Charles V. It is the oldest building in the city. In front of the castle entrance is the statue of Lange Wapper, a giant who—according to legend—prowled the streets of Antwerp at night, frightening the city's inhabitants. The building's entrance is surmounted by a bas-relief of a man with his legs spread, once carrying a huge phallus. It represents Semini, a Celtic fertility deity, later partially removed and disfigured by the Puritan Jesuits in the 17th century.

A place where history buffs might pause for a moment when passing this bridge and the Melkader. Remember that terrible things happened here during the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648). Historical facts: On June 21, 1638, during the Eighty Years' War, a decisive battle took place in this area on the Melkader between the Spanish and Dutch armies. This resulted in a major defeat for the Dutch armies. In great disarray, pursued by the Spanish armies (over 10,000 men), the Dutch armies retreated to Fort Liefkenshoek, a little further away. At least 3,000 Dutch soldiers were killed at this historic location, and hundreds were driven into the Melkader and drowned. Many soldiers were also taken prisoner. Only about 1,500 men reached the fort, and they were quickly recalled to Bergen op Zoom. Losses were high on both sides, and Maurice Frederik of Nassau-Siegen, the 17-year-old and only son of William of Nassau-Siegen, was killed here in Kallo. The southern Spanish army captured 3 standards, 50 banners, 26 guns, and 48 vessels. The defeat of the Dutch army at Kallo meant that the people of Antwerp remained under Spanish rule. The Battle of Kallo marked the failure of another attempt to annex Antwerp to the Republic. Intrigued? Read the full account at https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slag_bij_Kallo
