The city walls of Binche, a jewel of medieval military architecture, have been preserved in their entirety. The first wall already existed in the 12th century and stretched from the current Grand Place to the middle of the rue Notre Dame. The prosperity of the city led to a continuous increase in population, which made an extension of the walls necessary in the 13th century. The walls will be more than 2 kilometers long, supported by 30 towers and cover an area of 22 hectares. The Samme River was the guiding principle in the development of the various agricultural companies that settled in the Saint-Paul suburb. The river has now been diverted and no longer surrounds the city. The Tower on the Rock (Tour sur Roc) dominates from its full height, raised by a mound of earth in the continuity of the city wall.
