Confluence of the Hoëgne and the Vesdre. This is where almost all the water from the High Fens basin converges. When exceptionally heavy rainfall fell on the High Fens in June 2021, it led to an unprecedented flood disaster that severely affected this valley and its municipalities. Pepinster was one of the hardest hit.

The first known coal mining activities in the area date back to 1594. Wérister is specifically mentioned on June 10, 1684, on the occasion of a mining concession. However, the coal industry only really began to grow in 1827, when the Wérister colliery took over the Nooz-Donné concession, thus reaching a total area of 101 hectares. On June 10, 1873, a limited company was created with a capital of 600,000 francs. The coal mine had just been merged with the Fond des Fawes concession, covering an area of 67 ha 5 a, and on June 7, 1873, the company regained a quarter of the Foxhalle concession, covering 107 ha, for 135,000 francs, bringing the total area of the concession to 208 ha. Land was purchased near the railway line to expand industrial facilities and dig pits.

The Roche-aux-Faucons loop is a superb section of the RAVeL (Greenways and Cycle Routes in Wallonia). Eminently verdant, with a magnificent rocky ridge, the panorama is worth a pause, whether you are above or at the foot of the cliff.
