Meiningen looks back on a successful theater history. The first performance took place in Elisabethenburg Castle in 1776. In 1829, the first separate theater was built, but it burned down completely in 1908. The famous architect Karl Behlert then built the current theater building. It was dedicated to the theater duke Georg II, who viewed all elements of the theater as a total work of art. He directed the theater himself and designed many costumes and stage sets and developed the "Meiningen Principles," which included, among other things, a high degree of fidelity to the work and a high degree of realism. These principles made the Meiningen Theater famous throughout Europe. "The Meiningens" even went on tour. Today's drama schools still teach according to the Meiningen Principles. The theater is still important today and offers a diverse theater program.
