The Monastero di San Biagio is a historic monastery dating back to the end of the 14th century. It is located in the city centre. The monastery was probably founded in the last decades of the 14th century. In 1486 it was extensively renovated and expanded. The monastery reached its greatest size in the 17th century, when it housed 69 nuns and underwent a period of intensive building activity. In 1650 a bell tower was added, which was later modified in 1774 by Agostino Azzolini. On 11 July 1810 the monastery was suppressed by the Napoleonic troops, and the nuns were expelled. The complex was then used for various purposes, including a gendarmerie, a saltpetre factory and an orphanage. After a period of decline, the monastery was restored in 1975. Today it houses several cultural and educational institutions, including the Municipal Art Gallery (Pinacoteca Comunale), the Centro Cinema San Biagio, and the Fondazione Ert - Emilia Romagna Teatri. One of the most interesting architectural features of the former convent is the courtyard with a loggia on the ground floor, which is probably the oldest part of the building, while the loggia on the upper floor dates from the 15th-century renovations. The church of the convent once housed a painting by Giuseppe Milani and frescoes in the lost chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Today the church has been converted into the entrance to the Cinema San Biagio.
