This reed area is the only large habitat of this type between the Reschen Pass and Verona and is located at the fork of the most important bird flight routes. This is why fish and purple herons, ruffs, snipes, lapwings, black terns, ospreys, cranes, cormorants and white storks appear here again and again. The reed area at the southern end of Lake Kaltern is a nature reserve. It is a nesting place for countless rare birds and marsh animals. Scientists have identified over 100 species of birds here.
