The name Hafenlohr originates from the ancient Germanic root word "lara" and originally referred to a natural pasture.

The first stone defensive tower in Urphar probably existed as early as the 8th century, when the village was first mentioned. At the end of the 10th century, the defensive tower was rebuilt on its original foundations. It received an apse on the east side. The nave was added in 1296/97. Around 1340, a cross-arched vault was added to the choir tower. In the late 15th century, a confessional chapel (today's sacristy) with a six-part cross vault was added to the north wall of the choir, giving the church essentially its present appearance. It was originally a Catholic church. Older components were likely reused during the construction of the confessional chapel, as one of its windows is still of Romanesque origin.
