I love these old bridges and I have to take a picture of every beautiful one from above. This one also offers a very nice view of Marktheidenfeld.

You then get a very good idea of how devastating some floods must have been....

Bettingen am Main This town, at the confluence of the Aalbach and the Main Rivers, was first documented in 800 AD. The district, one of the northernmost in Baden-Württemberg, is located on shallow sandy soil, which is also where the Bettingen residents' nickname, the "Sand Hares," comes from. While viticulture and agriculture were a major source of income for the Bettingen residents until 1860, this was replaced by sandstone mining from the mid-18th century onward. Red sandstone was extracted from numerous quarries, and several stonemasonry businesses settled here. This source of income was also lost after World War I due to the construction of cement works. Tobacco was cultivated as a compensatory measure as early as the beginning of the 20th century. Until the currency reform, it was a popular barter item. However, affected by blue mold and too time-consuming for part-time farming, tobacco cultivation was also discontinued. In 1957/58, construction of the A3 motorway began. Land used for many agricultural activities was lost. Bettingen developed into a working-class community with a variety of commercial establishments. In 2002, the 1200th anniversary was celebrated. Historical craft and agricultural activities were demonstrated to the thousands of visitors by the entire Bettingen population. The cellar vault located here was built as a commemorative event by master mason Jürgen Diehm (Urphar) and Hanskarl Pink (Bettingen). We wish all guests from near and far who visit our idyllic village a pleasant stay. Source: Information board at the site

The Homburg Kallmuth Dowry for the Triefenstein Monastery The initial endowment of the Augustinian Canons' Monastery of Triefenstein in 1102 included a third of the Kallmuth, which had previously been owned by the Neustadt am Main Monastery. However, the winemaking tradition likely dates back further. The Triefenstein monks systematically cultivated the vineyard at the Kallmuth and marketed the fine wine throughout Germany. When the Swedes plundered the monastery in 1631 during the Thirty Years' War, over 100,000 liters of wine (approximately 150 barrels of 720 liters each) were stored in the massive cellars there. A large portion of this probably came from the Kallmuth. The last provost of Triefenstein, Melchior Zösch, had the retaining walls in the vineyard built at the end of the 18th century. Thanks to public funding, they have been extensively renovated in the last decade by the current owner, Prince of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg. Source: Information board at the site
