The Visconti Citadel in Bergamo Alta is a quadrangular fortress built in the 14th century by Bernabò Visconti to consolidate his dominion over the territory and control the city. It housed the military garrison and tax collection offices, with spaces such as the Hospitium Magnum, now home to important civic museums. The citadel was a symbol of the Visconti family's power and served as a military garrison, integrating with other fortifications in the upper city.

It's a steep climb up here, no matter which direction you come from. Unfortunately, the gate is still locked early in the morning, and you can't get in.

The citadel is a medieval fortress, built in the 14th century by the Visconti family to defend the city of Bergamo. The square is home to the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Natural Sciences, and markets are often held here.

I recommend visiting the fortress to anyone who is in the Upper Town. The walkway surrounding the small castle is particularly beautiful. There are memorials and monuments in memory of the great war. You can admire two views: one over the Monterosso area of Bergamo (with the stadium) and the hills as a backdrop, the other view overlooks the upper town, its towers and churches, with the San Vigilio hill in the distance .

Now it is more beautiful, since parking has been banned and the square is clear of cars.

The Clanezzo Castle was built towards the first half of the 10th century by Attone Leuco, Count of Almenno, who used it as a second residence. Thanks to its position, at the top of a hill surrounded by the Brembo and Imagna rivers, the Castle was in an excellent defensive position. Over time, ownership of the Castle passed to the Carminati family and, in 1250, to the Dalmasani family.

I was at the Rocca in May 2023. Admission for the tour below the tower and ascent to the tower 3 euros, which are totally worth it. The all-round view is great.

View of the Upper and Lower Town from San Vigilio from the terrace of the house adjacent to the last staircase leading to the top of the castle. Unique view because it is located from the side where the turret of the San Vigilio castle is closed to the public and is not fully visible in any other way from the castle. The terrace is generally not accessible, it was opened exceptionally for the Millegradini 2022.

The Castle of San Vigilio is the fortification located at the highest point on the Bergamo Hills. From its 496 meters above sea level, it dominates the entire territory: from the city, to the valleys, to the plain. Only the summit of Monte Bastia is located higher, to be precise 22 meters at an altitude of 518 m above sea level. Once out of the Scaletta dello Scorlazzone, take Via al Castello on the right, which guarantees an excellent overview of the Upper Town and the plain. After a hundred meters there is the access to the Castle with the relative ladder which extends over a length of 302 meters, an elevation of 36 m divided into 161 steps. Eventually you reach the top of this manor, directly accessing the upper square.

The Church of San Vigilio was built at the beginning of the 8th century, after the alleged stay of the Trentino bishop on the hills of Bergamo. During the 1200s it was governed by the order of Dominican friars and subsequently in 1300 by the Order of the Humiliated, abolished in 1500. It was renovated in 1512 and with the interventions carried out during the 18th and 20th centuries, the panoramic terrace overlooking the Lower Town and the western hills was also created.

The entire area of Fort San Marco, including the Porta del Soccorso and the related underground structures, were sold to private individuals in 1812, under French rule, together with the Castle of San Vigilio, which subsequently returned to the possession of the Municipality of Bergamo. The Porta del Soccorso is today the only part of Fort San Marco visible from the outside, hidden behind an anonymous gray door, along the Via Sotto le mura di Sant'Alessandro.

The center of Fort San Marco was made up of Piazza San Marco. Here the soldiers and guards were concentrated in shelter and war material was stored in special warehouses. The square was connected, via walkways and covered roads, to all the surrounding bastions, constituting the starting and finishing point of the tunnels that reached the gunboats and the sorties. Furthermore, a secret exit was created, called "Porta del Soccorso" which led to the outside of the fortress. This door, small and well camouflaged among the bush, also allowed the connection with the Castle of San Vigilio, known as the Chapel.
