Today, Lake Kaltern is heavily influenced by humans: especially on the west and east banks, there are bathing establishments, campsites, restaurants and commercially used areas that lead to a burden on the natural environment. This makes this quiet zone on the south bank all the more important. It is a nature conservation project in which two ponds and bays were built in the reeds. These are intended to provide new habitats and nesting places for water birds and spawning grounds for fish. This extensive reed belt on the southern shore of the lake provides shelter, food, spawning, resting and breeding grounds for aquatic insects and birds, amphibians and fish. This reed area is the only large habitat of this type between the Reschen Pass and Verona and is located at the fork of the most important bird flight routes. This is why fish and purple herons, ruffs, snipes, lapwings, black terns, ospreys, cranes, cormorants and white storks appear here again and again.
