The military harbor of Peschiera had to be deepened by over 2 m in 1861 to accommodate a newly built gunboat for the Garda flotilla. When digging with a so-called paternoster excavator north of the Querini Bastion, numerous bronze objects were unearthed. These were kept by the Austrian first lieutenant Heinrich von Silber and the naval engineer Lorentz. Von Silber suspected that a ship with the items on board had once sunk here. Peschiera del Garda is a lively and always on the move town. There are some beaches for swimming and sunbathing; or you can enjoy a walk in the narrow alleys of the center or along the port. The old city is surrounded by canals and you can tour on small boats to better discover the historic city walls. Peschiera del Garda is the only town on Lake Garda where there is a train station. The cycle path along the Mincio towards Mantua starts from here.

The Legend of the Cross: Once upon a time there was a very aggressive wolf who lived on the Rocca di Manerba. The wolf was terrifying and no one dared come near him. The two young men were driven off the cliff and fell into the water of the lake. At that point, two huge rocks rise out of the water, commemorating the sacrifice of the two challengers. The third candidate, a young farmer from the nearby village of Pieve Vecchia, took courage and climbed to the top of the cliff where the wolf inhabited a den overlooking the lake. During the ensuing fight, the young man protected himself with a large cross that he used as a shield. This cross is said to have scared the wolf so much that it kept recoiling until it fell off the cliff too and died. Today there is a large cross on the top (which is very nicely lit at night), in honor of that young man from Pieve Vecchia who gave the beautiful promontory back to the people of Manerba.
