This was one of the most important Cistercian centers in Italy. The church was built around 1135 according to the wishes of Saint Bernard of Claivaux and the Pallavicino family. The monastery of Chiaravalle, founded in 1136, represents one of the first Cistercian settlements in Italy. Originating from Clairvaux in Burgundy, it followed the Cistercian tradition with influences from Bernard of Clairvaux. The structure reflects typical Cistercian characteristics, with the presbytery at a straight end and square chapels on the sides. The monastic community actively contributed to the reclamation of the Po Valley, but in 1248 it was almost totally destroyed by the imperial troops.
