The Kyll River originates in the Zitterwald forest from the confluence of three short headwaters near the village of Losheimergraben, which belongs to the Belgian municipality of Büllingen (Wallonia) and the German municipality of Hellenthal (Euskirchen district). One of these streams rises in the Belgian part of the village in the cellar of a hotel. They join at the border near Federal Highway 265 at an elevation of approximately 660 meters above sea level; the river's kilometer markers only begin at this point. The patronage of this church, "Maria (or in another spelling:) Assumption of Mary," refers to one of the many memorial days or feast days in honor of the Mother of God Mary. It goes back to the feast of her bodily assumption into heaven, which the (Catholic) Church celebrates annually on August 15th. In the Orthodox churches, the feast is called "Maria Dormition." In many rural areas, it is customary for the population to collect bundles of herbs (called "Kruggweusch" in the Rhenish dialect) on this day and to bless them in the festival service.
