The Castle of San Salvatore in Susegana, owned by the Collalto counts (privately owned), is an imposing medieval fortified complex, built in the second half of the 13th century as a strategic fortress. It later became a stately home and cultural center during the Renaissance, hosting artists such as Cima da Conegliano and writers such as Giovanni Della Casa. It suffered extensive damage during the First World War before being restored for special events.

In the Veneto mountains, there's a silent and surprising presence: the rock hippopotamus 🏔️🐾 It's not a real animal, but a natural form sculpted by time, where the rock—shaped by water, frost, and wind—takes on the unmistakable profile of a crouching hippopotamus. A perfect example of Alpine pareidolia, the phenomenon that allows us to recognize familiar figures in nature. There, among the woods and ridges, the "hippopotamus" seems to watch over the Veneto landscape, reminding us that the mountains are not just about effort and elevation gain, but also about imagination, wonder, and play. Just slow down, look up, and let yourself be surprised.

along the dirt path that leads from the Castle of San Salvatore and Collalto you come across this shrine, which goes almost unnoticed, dedicated to the blessed Giuliana, ancestor of the current counts of Collalto and Santa Lucia. Inside there is a fresco dedicated to the two Saints.

Along the route of the Great War, from Susegana towards Collalto, you come across this structure in the Coste area. An illustrative table reminds us of the historical responsibility of Italy, which declared war on Austria on 23 May 2015 and not vice versa

The first construction of a solid castle, for exclusive military use on the well-protected Collalto hill, dates back to the first half of the 12th century, with the erection of a mighty guard tower. It is the gigantic keep that still stands alone among the ruins of the fortified town, with that sad and chipped face, testimony to the passage of time and lived history.

The climb that leads to the castle and the Carmine church, located about halfway up, is beautiful, pleasant and a little challenging.
