Here the noble family (the Collalto) originated, which extended its properties over much of the Alta Marca Trevigiana and dominated the political scene in the 1300s. The first construction of a solid castle (in a strategic position to control the passage along the Piave river , between the hills of Susegana and Montello) dates back to the first half of the 12th century, with the erection of a mighty watchtower. It is the gigantic keep that still stands alone today among the ruins of the fortified town. It was very important in the Middle Ages, until its annexation to the Venetian Republic. The great war reduced it to a heap of rubble from which, slyly, the tower that remained almost unscathed emerges, and one of the towers of the walls, formerly a bell tower.
