Designed by Roman architect Felice Nori and completed in 1935, it was not inaugurated until 1938, marking the twentieth anniversary of the battle during the final phase of the First World War. Its shape is similar to that of other similar buildings: a cubic structure with a large concrete plaza, empty at the center, surrounded by stairs. The complex is divided into two parts: the lower, three-story section houses the bodies in individual or shared cells with marble cladding; the upper section is a large tower offering views of the landscape that was at the center of the fighting. The shrine stands at the eastern end of Montello at an altitude of 176 m (located in Colesel de Zorzi or Colesel delle Zorle, in the municipality of Nervesa della Battaglia). It contains the remains of 9,325 (initially 9,316) Italian soldiers (of whom 6,099 are identified and 3,226 are unknown), previously buried in approximately one hundred and twenty cemeteries scattered along the Piave front.
