The small sacred monument we encounter on Monte Gottero is perhaps the perfect place for a brief moment of reflection. A few years ago, Christiane Völkel commented on the wonderfully fitting sentence by the Italian poet Francesco Petrarch (who lived in the 14th century), "Everywhere one has heaven above oneself," as follows: "What is the use of prayer? This question moves me (...) I have found for myself the answer and the certainty that when I pray I am with the Lord, or rather, that when I pray he is often noticeably closer to me than usual. Thus, I retain the possibility of pouring out my heart to him (...) This intimacy with him makes me believe in him."

Refreshingly cold fountain water and a small shrine in homage to Marco Pantani; definitely worth a detour

The current church was built with a single nave in 1725 on the remains of the previous structure that collapsed for unknown reasons. In the third altar on the right side there is a statue of the Immaculate Conception, attributed to Anton Maria Maragliano, in the fourth altar on the left a Byzantine crucifix and a canvas depicting the Madonna delle Grazie. The work Ultima cena, preserved in the sacristy, is by the local painter Luca Cambiaso. In the façade, in Baroque style, two links of the Pisan port chain are visible on the right side; according to historical sources, these objects were stolen, as a sort of "war trophy", by Trancheo Stanco from Moneglia in 1284 during the battle of Meloria between the Genoese and Pisan fleets, which saw the former victorious.

The cycle path, the stretch of which goes from Levanto to beyond Monte La Guardia towards Bonassola, is part of the BI3 var. Moncenisio: Francigena cycle route. It follows the sea and the old railway, between tunnels and spectacular views.

On the Guaitarola pass, on the slopes of the homonymous mountain, a small fountain seems to be dedicated to those who pedal: it recalls the passage from here of the 2006 Giro d'Italia, in a stage between Livorno and Sestri Levante.

Wonderful cycle-pedestrian path away from traffic and along the sea, a real pleasure.
