From the imposing chestnut forest, the main path leads to a clearing located on a huge travertine spur, overlooking the forest. On the rock face, you can see, at the top right, the fascinating structure of the Hermitage of San Marco, a natural cavity closed by a church-shaped building with a bell tower and connected to the path by a stone staircase. The wall, in Romanesque style, is made of ashlar stones and has a single-lancet window and five double-lancet windows. In ancient times, the building housed a convent founded by Cistercian monks at the beginning of the 13th century and consists of two overlapping rooms, connected by a staircase resting on the rock. It is a very “poor” construction, which recalls the Benedictine monastic rule. Inside the Hermitage, it is still possible to find traces of the primitive frescoes painted by the monks on the walls and on the vault of the lower room. On the ceiling of the cave, the splendid “tapestry” of maidenhair fern is noteworthy. The Hermitage of San Marco has been restored and brought back to its maximum splendor. It retains its evocative power that attracts tourists and travelers, lovers of history and nature. (c) https://visitascoli.it/esperienze/colle-san-marco-meta-di-eremiti-nel-corso-dei-secoli/

8월 17, 2023, Monestino Ruins
Monestino, once a fraction of the municipality of Rocca Casaregnana, today is a set of a few ruins immersed in the vegetation. Its history is a fascinating piece of the medieval history of the Marches. The first traces identify it as a "monastery", a term that suggests an origin linked to a religious community. It is mentioned in the Ascoli land registers of 1381 alongside Vetoli, both part of a union. Over the centuries, Monestino experienced depopulation and territorial changes, culminating in the annexation to Rocca Casaregnana and then to Roccafluvione after the unification of Italy. Today, you can still see the traces of the houses half-buried in the vegetation, as well as the remains of a farmhouse that reveal the various architectural interventions that have taken place over time. A still active spring flows in front of the decaying building, and the road, going up, leads to the top of the village, where the interlocking between nature and architecture creates a suggestive atmosphere.

Beautiful square - an Italian piazza to take a deep breath, take a break, enjoy and dream.

The cathedral as a whole is rich in works of artistic and historical importance, but the crypt whose ceilings are being restored is bringing to light a vast pictorial cycle dating back to the thirteenth century. Furthermore, in some volutes of the ceiling it is now possible to admire the stratifications of frescoes from the oldest containing only flowers and eight-pointed stars, to the sinopias used to fresco and to the subsequent completed frescoes.

Here Italy shows itself from its most beautiful side! The medieval town of Civitella del Tronto is located on a hilltop in the Monti della Laga. The Tronto river flows in the valley below. The narrow, partly cobbled streets are best explored on foot. At the highest point of the town sits an elongated fortress, which essentially dates back to the 19th century.

The Piazza del Popolo got its current appearance around the year 1500, when a systematic beautification of the square was carried out. The entire piazza is paved with travertine and is considered to be one of the most beautiful piazzas in Italy. On the sides of the piazza are the "Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo" (today's town hall), the "Chiesa San Francesco" and the "Loggia dei Mercanti". Furthermore, several restaurants, wine bars and cafes are arranged around the pizza, including the well-known Caffè Meletti - just a beautiful place that invites you to linger and stroll. At the piazza you will also find the "Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo", today's town hall, which was built around 1530 in its current form. Under the architect Cola dell'Amatrice, it was created by merging three small buildings, with a new facade built in front of them to create a uniform front line, only the medieval tower remained unchanged.

The Cathedral of Sant 'Emidio is the main church of Ascoli Piceno, the first construction of which is very likely from around AD 400. The interior of the basilica was redesigned around 1530 together with a new facade and is full of special and extraordinary works of art. Below the sanctuary is the crypt in which the relics of St. Emidio are kept. Overall, this church is very worth seeing, as it is something special due to its magnificent and special equipment and shape. The two towers and the facade are - like so many "public" buildings from this time - made of travertine, many furnishings - especially those of particular importance such as figures of saints - made of marble. Unfortunately, the basilica is not always open to visitors, I was just lucky that a wedding took place here shortly before my visit and the sacristan allowed me to take a short tour of the church after the ceremony outside of the actual opening times - a small donation had to be made, of course 😇 🤫
